Ghazal
Khazana 2014: Celebrating 13 glorious years of soulful
melodies, the most talented Ghazal singers of the decade performed
together on a single stage to raise funds for CPAA and PATUT (The
Parents Association Thalassaemic Unit). This annual fundraiser
spear-headed by noted Ghazal singer Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas provides a
rare opportunity for Ghazal aficionados to experience live performances
by a multitude of renowned and talented artist in one show, whilst
donating towards a noble cause. This year's Khazana celebrated 'Ghazals
and Nazms' in 100 years of Indian Cinema' and featured performances by
Pankaj Udhas, Suresh Wadkar, Talat Aziz, Sonu Nigam, Sadhna Sargam,
Bhupinder and Mitali Singh, Shruti Pathak, Runa and Neha Rizvi, Tauseef
Akhtar, Surinder Khan and Pooja Gaitonde.

Skip-a-thon
Culminating Event: A first of its kind event, Skip-a-thon, 'Skip- for-
a- cause' activity where school students were educated, encouraged and channelized into raising funds for cancer patients was a huge success.
Fifteen schools participated with amazing results. Childhood obesity and
life-style diseases have become a major concern. A sedentary life
pushing buttons is getting our kids nowhere. Skip-a-thon was a fun
initiative to drive kids towards health-consciousness, while growing the
spirit of volunteerism. The culminating event was held on 12 July at St.
Teresa's Convent High School, Mumbai.

CPAA's Susmita Mitra conducted a 3 day Psycho Oncology workshop for the
staff and volunteers of Snehanchal NGO of Nagpur from 8 - 10 July at
their Palliative Home. Snehanchal Palliative Home has been serving
palliative patients from Maharashtra and MP. Their dedicated group of
volunteers is also doing excellent work in the Regional Cancer Centre of
Nagpur.

CPAA's Executive Director Neeta More was invited to participate in the
'Vyasanmukti
Saahitya Sammelan' organised by the Social Justice Department of
Maharashtra on 14 and 15 July 2014 at the Yashvantrao Chavan Pratishthan
, Colaba, Mumbai and by the Public Health Foundation of India to
participate in PHFI - Camtech India Clinical Summit and Hack-A Thon in
Bangalore on 18 July 2014 as a panelist on Voice of the patient:
Challenges in Accessing Quality RMNCH Care.
On the Eve of Independence Day, CPAA and JSM Medical Trust had organised
a drawing competition for childhood cancer patients of KEM Hospital. The
competition was judged by actress Aditi Sarangdhar, Dr. Chandrakala,
Head of Heamatology Dept and CPAA's Director Special Projects, Piali
Syam.

Awareness: CPAA's Neelima Batra
conducted a lecture on breast and cervix cancer awareness for the
beneficiaries of SOS village, Gurukul, Faridabad on 16 July. The women
were also educated on personal hygiene and cleanliness and given up tips
on how to follow a healthy and nutritious yet economical diet.
An
awareness program on the ill-effects of tobacco was conducted at Vidya
Niketan School, Saket on 22 August. Students of class 6 - 8 attended
this program along-with their teachers. This was followed by an
interactive and informative presentation by Dr Deepali Kapoor of Apollo
Hospital about ill effects of tobacco. She also invited the children to
become CPAA's ambassadors and help spread the message further to their
family and friends. The lecture enthused the children who pledged to say
no to tobacco.
A health check up camp for 90 women and children was organised for the
beneficiaries of SOS Village, Faridabad on 16 July. Another early
detection camp was held at Okhla Centre in association with Vidya
Foundation on 21 August for 97 people.

A
Special Support Group Meeting of breast cancer survivors was
organised on 5 July. This meeting was dedicated to Ms R Anuradha a
valued volunteer of CPAA who fought her battle with breast cancer
gallantly. She displayed tremendous courage and determination for 17
years before she succumbed to it. She was also an editor in the Ministry
of Information & Broadcasting. On this occasion Dr. Julka, Dean of AIIMS
and Dr. Anurag Srivastava, Head of Surgical Disciplines spoke on issues
related to women's health.
CPAA's Rashmi Warty was invited by New Express Channel on 9 July
to speak on NGO's role in helping Bone Marrow Transplant patients.
Raksha Bandhan celebrated with great fervour on 8 August by
the adults and kids alike at the Rajgharia Dharamshala. The women
participated enthusiastically in the Mehendi designing competition and
the childhood cancer patients and their siblings brought a wave of cheer
and laughter during the interactive games and drawing competition. They
all enjoyed the refreshments sponsored by a generous donor.
Independence Day was celebrated in the Pediatric wards of All
India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on 14 August. Childhood
cancer patients sang patriotic songs and tricolor flags and wrist bands
were distribute by the Flag Foundation of India. Prof V K Paul, Head of
Pediatric Dept and Dr Rachna Seth, Head, Pediatric Oncology participated
in these celebrations. |

A cancer screening camp was held on 8 July 2014 at Malewadi (Talegaon)
for 38 women.
'Friends of Upasana' organized a cultural fundraising nite on 10 August
for CPAA. The students danced enthusiastically to several patriotic
songs. This event was organised by Mita Banerjee , Writer and Founder of
Team Miracle.
